Review:

bought this car and fell in love with it especially the power and comfort [3.5 se]. handling is good . but now i have a a slip in the tranny from 2nd to 3rd gear , found out just to start trying to fix the tranny it will be 1500 dollars to start and about 3000 for a remanufactured tranny . i started doing research on the tranny issue and lots of other people are having problems with there tranny's also . so yes the resale is lower on a Nissan which is a good deal but look into other cars when looking , i did the 1500 dollar repair and it only helped a little bit , now i am flipping the coin on whether to ditch this rocket of a car

Review:
I bought the car used at 24K, and use as a daily commuter. Being somewhat of a 'tuner', this car has seen many aftermarket upgrades...Intake, headers, exhaust, suspension, and audio. Being in the automotive industry, this car does very well if kept up well, fluid flushes, fuel injection services, etc.

Pros:
Nice car. Fairly comfortable. Good looks. When no problems - runs well.
Cons:
Service can only be performed by a Nissan dealer and they charge significantly more than other mechanics for the same work (and tend to "find" other things that are "wrong" with your car too!).
Review:
Overall - we've been very pleased with our 2004 Altima. It runs well, is fairly comfortable (and I'm 6'5" tall!) and looks very nice.
The problem is with the way Nissan has designed the engine and electronic components. ONLY a Nissan dealer can do much of the work - and they tend to charge 2-3 times as much as other mechanics. For example, I took my Altima to a mechanic when the service engine soon light came on. They read the codes and made the repairs. When they were done, they're diagnostic computer could not clear the codes. FYI - there's is a standard (OBD-2) for how the engine error codes should be stored/retrieved. It's evident that Nissan doesn't care what the industry standard is - they'd rather force you to come to one of their dealers. My mechanic ended up taking our car to a local dealer who told them it would require somewhere in the neighborhood of $200 worth of electrical work to see IF they could find/fix the problem. I'm sure that if they could figure out my credit card limit that they'd charge as much as they could!

Pros:
Great power especially with 5 speed and V6. Rides nice and very roomy for a mid-size.
Cons:

Where to start. Replaced alternator at 36k, brought in after for air in cooling system, suspension problem at 40k, replaced bad battery b/c of bad alternator, oil pump failed and seized engine at 60k, replaced engine. Brought in 4 times after new engine because of same problem with air pocket in cooling system. Problems keep going and going. Thank god for extended warranty. Nissan's are supposed to be reliable and we like the car when it's running. Lots of power and looks good.
